Lake Superior Consulting is seeking a Structural Engineer IV to join our team.

Lake Superior Consulting is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer IV to join our growing Facilities Engineering group. This senior-level role is responsible for leading project engineering efforts that require advanced technical expertise, sound judgment, and independent decision-making. The Structural Engineer IV plans and executes complex engineering work involving the evaluation, selection, application, and adaptation of structural engineering techniques, procedures, and design criteria. The successful candidate will develop innovative solutions to challenging design problems, prepare and review drawings, specifications, and calculations, and oversee project activities to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and accepted engineering practices. In addition, this role provides technical guidance, mentorship, and leadership to junior engineers and technical staff while supporting the successful delivery of projects. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Perform structural design and analysis calculations using governing codes and standards, engineering formulas, skills, and experience. 

  • Provide leadership and guidance to more junior engineers while executing a variety of structural engineering tasks. 

  • Capable of working within or leading a multi-disciplinary engineering project team. 

  • Layout and detail entire projects as an Engineer of Record or portions of projects under the supervision of the Engineer of Record 

  • Provide CAD drawings or sketches to incorporate in drawings by Designers/Drafters 

  • Research design options and document findings for Engineer of Record 

  • Review shop drawings 

  • Assume the lead engineer’s role on assigned projects 

  • Develop construction cost estimates 

  • Direct and supervise other Designer’s/Drafter’s activities as needed 

  • Attend and participate in client meetings as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) 

  • Perform field activities such as observing and recording existing field conditions, taking and verifying measurements within project area 

  • Organize, draft, and coordinate technical documents 

  • Serve as the project engineer by leading design and engineering effort, and managing proposed schedule and budget throughout each project 

  • Work either independently or closely with others in a team environment on construction plans with clients, architects, and other professionals 

  • Present technical aspects of a project and structural design approach to technical and non-technical individuals 

  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge and appreciation of all applicable engineering codes and practices 

Position Requirements: 

Education, Certifications/Licenses, Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited university 

  • 5+ years’ experience as a structural engineer 

  • PE preferred, EIT required 

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • History of successful completion of projects 

  • Ability to work independently and in close collaboration with others 

  • Preferred experience with engineering and/ design software such as AutoCAD, Navisworks, Civil 3D, RISA, Excel Spreadsheets, Bluebeam REVU etc. 

  • Understand 2-D and 3-D drafting techniques 

  • Firm knowledge of design codes including: ASCE 7, AISC 360, ACI 318, etc.  

Physical Requirements and Demands: 

  • The job requires the ability to sit for extended periods at a computer workstation.  Routinely use standard office equipment such as but not limited to: computers, phones, copiers, and filing cabinets. Regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is frequently required to stand, talk, and hear. 

  • Standing for extended periods. 

  • Occasional lifting in up to 50lbs. 

  • Exposure to weather including heat and cold climates. 

  • Ability to work long hours and overtime when projects demand.

Lake Superior Consulting offers a competitive compensation package. The actual starting salary will be determined based on a variety of factors, including your skills, experience, and office/market location. The anticipated salary range for this position is $95,000 - $132,800.
